Report: Former NFL QB Criticizes Coaching of College Quarterbacks
Jenna Watson/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK

The NFL offseason is upon us, with many football fans counting down the days until the NFL Draft. Part of that is looking at which quarterbacks are the best prospects available in this upcoming draft. However, one former NFL QB reveals that this is difficult to gauge in this current system.

Kurt Warner Criticizes College Coaching System

Kurt Warner spoke out on social media about the current state of college quarterbacks. He believes they are not properly prepared for the NFL. Because of this, Warner believes that it is tough to judge college quarterbacks solely based on their play in college football systems.

“I know many of you LOVE college football, but as I start to dive into these college QBs, it’s hard for me to even watch: very few play on schedule, the pass concepts are a mess most of the time, they run the same play over & over, a million bubble screens, can’t find many concepts that translate to next level… and then ppl are asked to figure out how good they will be at next level!? (Nearly impossible in my mind)” -Kurt Warner

C.J. Stroud Is an Example

On top of the above statement, Warner uses Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud as an example to prove his point. Warner stated that Stroud did not make the quickest decisions while playing at Ohio State. Yet, Warner believes Stroud showed he could make those quick decisions with the Texans.

“For me CJ Stroud is a great example – obviously really good in college & OSU runs more pro-style concepts than most but they didn’t ask him to process & get ball out as quickly as he did last year in HOU – so I had no idea he would be so good at processing so fast! He’s better in NFL than what we got to see in college, but many times you just don’t know until you know!” -Kurt Warner

Stroud defied a lot of criticism he faced leading up to last year’s draft. Something that backs up Warner’s point here is how Stroud did on his cognitive test prior to the 2023 NFL Draft. Stroud had a low score yet went on to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. It is to the point where agencies do not want future prospects taking cognitive tests partially because of Stroud’s performance.

Future of College Football

Kurt Warner may get his wish. That is because there seems to be a growing movement of college football coaches moving to the NFL. One of the most notable examples is Jim Harbaugh shortly after winning a national championship with the Michigan Wolverines. We will have to see if this trend continues and how it impacts the development of college quarterbacks.
